To engage and motivate your audience, climb MT. SAMIE
Previously, we discussed how to engage your audience by starting with the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me). But what might that actually be? Appeal to one of 7 core motivators of human behavior, aka MT. SAMIE:
Money: It isn't everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen.
Time: Since time is money, this follows close behind.
Security: Loss is painful. People are strongly motivated to avoid it.
Achievement: This typically leads to job security ... and money. If you can help someone accomplish something or achieve their sales targets, you are likely to grab their attention.
Making a difference: Once our basic needs have been met, we become altruistic and will often help out if we feel it will have an impact.
Image and reputation: We all want to be loved and respected by others. This is a key path to other forms of security.
Enjoyment: We instinctively seek pleasure. After avoiding pain, it is a basic human drive.
So next time you need a motivating hook to draw in your audience, in all likelihood, it is one of these 7 core motivators.
